There are a couple more equally pointless guest appearances, by fellow up-and-coming pop idols like Sean Kingston and Jessica Jarrell, and some seriously overreaching, key-changing melodrama on tracks like “Overboard” and “That Should Be Me”, but when Bieber keeps things simple and fun the songs really shine. The song’s only real misstep is Ludacris’s needless and phoned-in rap verse.

“Baby” bears many of their trademarks: effervescent synthesizers, a thumping, durable beat and a focus on pure vocal talent free from audible effects and edits. The team was also responsible for such hits as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”. The song was produced and co-written by Tricky Stewart and singer The-Dream, arguably the most rawly talented of Bieber’s many, more experienced R&B collaborators. The album spawned his biggest hit to date, the brilliant and catchy “Baby”. My World was followed appropriately enough by My World 2.0, Bieber’s debut album. Of course, it can be easily interpreted as a sly metaphor for another, less innocent life first, but Bieber’s young audience and Christian upbringing preclude me from making that assumption. The Usher-featuring, slow jamming “First Dance” nicely summarizes much of what makes Bieber’s music work for so many kids (and their parents): it’s a solid R&B track about the most innocent of subjects, a boy and girl’s first slow dance, at a prom that will be over by nine. “One Less Lonely Girl” effortlessly fills the tender, semi-acoustic ballad slot found in every teen pop star’s debut. The rest of the EP is less memorable and consistent than the album that would soon follow it but there are some definite standouts.

My World’s lead single “One Time” is a bouncy, bubbly, lovey tune and a fairly standard introduction to Bieber’s style and persona, the kind of song millions of girls could and likely have imagined Bieber singing directly to them.

During this period, while he built a sizable fanbase of screaming girls, he released his first EP, My World. Bieber went through the same slow incubation process that all pop stars go through nowadays, relegated to Radio Disney and sixth grade notebook covers, virtually unknown to anyone over the age of thirteen without children. Raised by a young single mother, Bieber developed an early passion for music and was discovered through YouTube at the age of 12 and signed to Island Records. The Ontario-born singer’s rise to fame has been a true underdog story, at least according to his 2011 3-D biopic/concert film, Never Say Never, a document more frighteningly persuasive than the propaganda of any fascist dictatorship. They are at worst, innocent and innocuous and sometimes pretty damn talented, and Justin Bieber would easily find his place alongside them in Lisa Simpson’s copy of Non-Threatening Boys Magazine. From Davy Jones to Michael Jackson to Justin Timberlake, there’s nothing new about talented singing boys, custom-made for the PG fantasies of pre-teen girls. The pop music landscape of the last fifty years is littered with Justin Bieber’s kind.
